A lot is happening right now. Election day just passed and we are rolling straight into the busiest/most stressful time of year. There are a million ways to cope with holiday stress but to no surprise, ALT AZ’s favorite way is with the power of music.

Music is one of the few things that can instantly change mood. A lot of coping mechanisms take time and vigilance for you to reap the benefits but not vibes from good sound. Music is like candy, only it won’t make you gain the Thanksgiving poundage.

For the finale of 2020, let’s turn to some alternative songs that are sure you set your mind right even under duress. These ones should do the trick.

1. “Shut Up and Dance” – Walk the Moon

This dance beat will get you on your feet and ready to shout along with the chorus in no time. Even just the opening bars are enough to perk your ears up. Walk the Moon has lots of great mood lifters under their belt but this one has truly stood the test of time. Whether you need to breathe life into a dying party or into yourself, you can turn to “Shut Up and Dance” for results.

2. “Semi-Charmed Life” – Third Eye Blind

Pretty sure Third Eye Blind could just coast on the royalties from this one for the rest of their life. What’s great about this hit, besides the catch “do do dooos” is that most of us have some sort of great memory attached to it. It might just remind you of younger days or it might bring up a specific moment but there are no shortage of good times to think of when you listen to “Semi-Charmed Life.” Turn it up and let the nostalgia flow over you.

3. “Victorious” – Panic! at the Disco

Off of one of Panic! at the Disco’s best albums, “Victorious” is going to boost your mood by giving you that “conquer it all” feeling. It’s a bit of an untraditional mood lifter in that it’s probably not going to have you grinning ear to ear or running to the dance floor but there is almost no better feeling than pure motivation.

4. “Check Yes, Juliet” – We The Kings

Haven’t thought about this one in a while, huh? That’s exactly how it made this list. It’s one of those songs that when you hear it you get that “oh crap, THIS song!” feeling. You start realizing you still know most of the lyrics and before you know it you’re smiling and dancing along to an old favorite.

5. “Tongue Tied” – Grouplove

This one has no trouble making you in a better mood. The key is in the intro. It’s hard to not be happy when you’re listening to other people be happy. You can actually HEAR the smiles in their voices. Warning, don’t try to karaoke with this one. It will sound awful, but if you’re not shy and don’t mind being a little embarrassing it’s still fun – speaking from personal experience. Also the music video is cool.

6. “Diane Young” – Vampire Weekend

You probably won’t understand the lyrics to this one. Even after listening to album for years I had to finally caved and looked up the meaning. I won’t spoil that fun for you though. The song has a very full, upbeat sound with lots of instruments being used and fun inflections of the voice that are fun to imitate. Vampire Weekend is a great band to sit down with and listen through an entire album.

7. “Break My Face” – AJR

Now here’s a song that is lifting your spirits by changing your whole attitude. The lyrics to this one are what is going to make you into a happier person through and through.

“Life gives you lemons
At least it gave you something
Okay!
So if I break my face, and I don’t look so great
My face is just my face (my face)”

Pair lyrics like that with a high beat and you have a recipe to get you to your happy place.

8. “All the Pretty Girls” – fun.

I’m always surprised how many people don’t know this one from fun. This is probably one of their best songs. The choir-like voices they use for it are what do it for me. The words are simple and easy to sing along with and the variety of instruments used keep the tempo lively for the ears. This is always a great one to throw on your “feel good” playlist.

9. “Good Time” – Owl City ft. Carly Rae Jepsen

An electronic dance beat with a simple melody is sometimes all you need to put that smile back on your face. It’s not a complicated formula. This song combines easy lyrics and a synth flare to quickly get you in the mood for whatever fun you’re about to get into. Sometimes, you just got to throw this one on in the car on the way to work to trick yourself into a good day.

10. “10 Ways” – The Unlikely Candidates

Looking for something to sway side-to-side to while trying to get something mundane done? Look no further than this older hit from The Unlikely Candidates. Most of their stuff is a little more lyrically edgy which makes this song a bit of a surprise. A love song. But not your normal sap. It’s got a fun strum pattern and lyrics that you’ll want to sing along to even if you don’t have someone in mind to sing them to.

Music is an incredible tool. It’s not just a tool to tell stories anymore. It has the strength to unite nations and save lives with important messages. Sometimes the message is to quit dragging ass and be in a better mood. We could use more of that as we close out 2020.
