Coheed and Cambria is known for weaving complex narratives into the band’s music, with different characters and storylines carrying over from song to song and album to album. Now, they’ve taken on perhaps their most surprising story yet: what happened after “Jessie’s Girl”?

The prog metallers have released “Jessie’s Girl 2,” which they describe as a sequel to Rick Springfield‘s ’80s hit.

“Has anyone ever written a sequel to another artist’s song?” muses Coheed frontman Claudio Sanchez. “I don’t think so. As a fan of movies, it just seemed like a really interesting idea.”

“Jessie’s Girl 2,” which features a verse from Springfield himself, finds our protagonist from the original song now together with Jessie’s girl, only the relationship hasn’t exactly turned out how he imagined it. The track is available now for digital download, and you can watch the accompanying Springfield-starring video streaming now on YouTube.

Additionally, “Jessie’s Girl 2” will be released on a vinyl single on September 4. The B-side includes a “director’s cut” version of the song.
