Gorillaz is working on new music, and according to frontman Damon Albarn, it’s certainly taking a specific direction.
Speaking with NME, Albarn describes the fresh material as “carnival-themed.”
“We’re really going back to the spirit of the first record,” he explains. “It’s really exciting and we’ve been really enjoying it.”
Albarn adds that working on new Gorillaz stuff has provided a “nice counter-balance” to his upcoming solo album, The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream Flows, due out November 12.
“I’ve definitely needed a dose of something else after I finished that record,” Albarn says. “Steel pan drums and Casio MT-40s were always going to be a good cure.”
Also in the interview, Albarn ponders the possibility of another Blur album to follow their 2015 comeback effort, The Magic Whip.
“We did have a chat recently, but we haven’t really progressed further than that,” Albarn shares. “We did have an idea though; I’ve just been a bit busy at the moment obviously.”
“When it happens, I’ll be made up,” he says. “When it’s wanted, I’ll do it. I don’t want to foist that stuff on anybody unnecessarily.”
