Tool has undoubtedly inspired many a fan to pursue music, including Aquaman himself.
Actor Jason Momoa, who stars as the Protector of the Deep in the DC Extended Universe, is something of a bass fanatic, and he credits Tool for his love of the oft-unheralded instrument.
As Momoa tells Bass Player magazine, he started off as a guitar player, but a specific moment during the filming of Aquaman led him to turn to the four-string.
“It was my assistant’s birthday, and she really loves Tool, so I borrowed a bass from my buddy and we all played ‘Sober’ for her,” Momoa recalls. “Right then, my passion for bass really exploded. The moment I put it on, I could just feel the connection — and it was all over.”
Momoa’s other bass inspirations include Pantera, Rage Against the Machine, Primus, Black Sabbath and Red Hot Chili Peppers. You may recall last fall when Primus posted a video of Momoa and Les Claypool jamming together.
By the way, Momoa isn’t the only actor who’s been inspired by Tool. Late Saved by the Bell star Dustin Diamond was a big fan of Justin Chancellor, and had hoped to meet the Tool bassist before Diamond’s untimely death earlier this month.
