K.Flay‘s newest track some comes with extra rage, courtesy of Tom Morello.
The Rage Against the Machine guitarist is featured on the song, which is titled “TGIF.” While you might think Morello wouldn’t want to be a part of something that shares its name with a corporate chain restaurant, “TGIF” is actually about something very different. As K.Flay tells ABC Audio, the song was inspired by her pondering the “capitalistic creation” of Friday.
“Friday’s made-up,” K.Flay says. “And the notion that we should celebrate it is actually really just reinforcing a Monday-through-Friday work week, which is the backbone of capitalism.”
That certainly sounds like something Rage has been raging against, which is why K.Flay actually name-checks the “Killing in the Name” rockers in “TGIF” with the lyric, “I wanna rage against the f***ing machine.”
“Number one, who else are you gonna reference?” K.Flay says. “And also, their band name is amazing. You know, Rage Against the Machine, that’s what I’m talking about.”
As it turns out, that line was something of a prophecy, as K.Flay wrote it before asking Morello to play on “TGIF.”
“The idea came up, like, ‘I should ask Tom to play on it,'” she recalls. “I already mentioned Rage, he would shred on it. So I just texted him, and he was super down…[he] sounded amazing.”
“TGIF” marks K.Flay and Morello’s second song together — they previously collaborated on the song “Lucky One” off Morello’s 2018 solo album, The Atlas Underground.
“I think that’s where our big commonality lies, is an openness to changing music, new forms of music,” K.Flay says. “Like, young people who are doing music, what is exciting to them?”
“TGIF” appears on K.Flay’s upcoming EP Inside Voices, due out June 11.
