The Jaded Hearts Club has shared a version of the oft-covered Screamin’ Jay Hawkins song “I Put a Spell on You.”
The all-star group — which is made up of Muse‘s Matt Bellamy, Blur‘s Graham Coxon, Jet‘s Nic Cester, The Last Shadow Puppets‘ Miles Kane, The Zutons drummer Sean Payne, and guitarist Jamie Davis — recorded the classic tune for their upcoming debut album, You’ve Always Been There.
“I was surprised there isn’t already a rock version of ‘I Put a Spell on You’ out there,” Bellamy tells Rolling Stone, apparently forgetting Marilyn Manson‘s or even Creedence Clearwater Revival‘s version.
“Muse did a rock version of ‘Feeling Good,’ so I had an an idea of how to approach it,” Bellamy adds. “In particular I liked the idea of combining Hal Mooney’s chordal arrangement on Nina [Simone‘s] version with the more unhinged wild vocal style of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, and Nic is one of the few singers around who could pull that off.”
You can listen to The Jaded Hearts Club’s cover of “I Put I Spell on You,” and watch its accompanying, fittingly witchy video, streaming now on YouTube.
You’ve Always Been There is due out this Friday.
