Foo Fighters‘ latest song, “Making a Fire,” has allowed them to pull neck and neck on Billboard‘s rock chart with an artist who started his career 20 years before they did.

“Making a Fire,” from the Foos’ latest album Medicine at Midnight, is the band’s 28th top 10 on Billboard‘s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. Their first was their debut single, “This Is a Call,” back in 1995.

That ties Dave Grohl and company them with the late Tom Petty, who racked up 28 top 10s both solo and with his band The Heartbreakers between the time the chart came into existence in 1981 and 1999.  Petty has held the record for most top 10s for more than two decades.

The artist with the next most top 10s on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart is Shinedown, with 27, followed by Five Finger Death Punch, Godsmack and Van Halen, all with 26; and Aerosmith and Metallica, tied with 24.  Shinedown has had the most number ones on that tally, with 16. Petty and the Foos have both had 10 chart-toppers.
