Over 30 years after making their debut with “Touch Me, I’m Sick,” Mudhoney will help keep pollution from making Seattle’s waterways sick.
Residents of the Seattle have voted to name a tunnel boring machine MudHoney, after the grunge pioneers. The machine will be used to excavate tunnels as part of the Ship Canal Water Quality Project, which a press release says will “prevent an average of 75 million gallons of polluted stormwater and sewage from entering [Seattle’s] waterways each year.”
“Since the late ’80s, Mudhoney, the Seattle-based foursome whose muck-crusted version of rock, shot through with caustic wit and battened down by a ferocious low end, has taken a stand against overflows into our waterways,” the release reads.
The name MudHoney won the contest with more than 35,000 votes, perhaps inspired by Pearl Jam‘s endorsement of the campaign. It beat out other contestants such as Sir Digs-a-Lot, named after Seattle rapper Sir Mix-a-Lot, and Boris the Plunger, a reference to an old Seattle children’s program The J. P. Patches Show.
