The guitar that Kurt Cobain played — and subsequently smashed — during Nirvana‘s first-ever U.S. tour in 1989 is going up for auction.
Cobain had destroyed the instrument — a 1973 Fender Mustang — at the end of a show in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania on July 9. He later traded it to Sluggo Cawley of the punk band Hullabaloo for a similarly smashed Gibson SG.
As part of the trade, Cobain signed the Mustang on behalf of Nirvana alongside an inscription reading, “Yo Sluggo, Thank for the trade. If its [sic] illegal to Rock and Roll, then throw my a*** in jail.”
The guitar will go up for auction as part of an upcoming sale by Julien’s Auctions, taking place November 11-13 in person at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City and online. It’s expected to fetch between $200,000 and $400,000.
