The Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. has announced a new solo album called Melodies on Hiatus.
The record, Hammond’s fifth full-length effort on his own, arrives June 23. You can listen to lead single “100-99,” featuring hip-hop artist GoldLink, now via digital outlets and watch its accompanying video streaming on YouTube.
“I grew up listening to ’90s hip-hop, and I would always gravitate towards the melodic hooks in the songs I heard on the radio, specifically anything Dr. Dre was producing or rapping on,” Hammond says. “Years later, I noticed myself pulling from the style of those melodic lines in my guitar work, even though it wasn’t obvious to anyone else as I was so directly associated with being in a rock band.”
He adds, ‘”100-99’ was something I’ve wanted to do for some time — work with a rapper over a beat and guitar part I wrote — and it’s really exciting that I was able to do it with GoldLink.”
Melodies on Hiatus also features guest spots by Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders and Billy Idol guitarist Steve Stevens.
Hammond is playing a run of U.S. solo shows in September. For the full list of dates and all ticket info, visit AlbertHammondJr.com.
The Strokes’ most recent album is 2020’s The New Abnormal.
