There’s no taking the wind out of AWOLNATION‘s “Sail.”
The band’s breakout hit single has officially been certified Diamond by the RIAA in recognition of 10 million units sold. It’s only the 57th song to achieve that feat.
Originally released in 2010, “Sail” was later included on AWOLNATION’s 2011 debut album, Megalithic Symphony. It ended up spending a total of 79 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, the second-longest run for any song in the history of the chart, and the most for an independent artist.
Not only that, but “Sail” also spawned one of the greatest cat videos in the history of the internet.
“I wrote [‘Sail’] with the intention of showing a few friends and my family,” says frontman Aaron Bruno. “It’s a very raw and honest song, so I was kinda nervous to share.”
He continues, “I continue to be shocked and humbled that this many millions of people have related [to ‘Sail.’] Never in my wildest dreams would I have even imagined this gift.”
Earlier this year, AWOLNATION reissued Megalithic Symphony in celebration of its 10th anniversary. The band also performed the album from front to back during a streaming concert.
AWOLNATION’s most recent album is 2020’s Angels Miners & the Lightning Riders.
