Turnstile‘s three nods were among the surprises when the 2023 Grammy nominations were announced this week. Not only did the hardcore outfit get recognized in the Best Rock Song and Performance categories for “Blackout” and “Holiday,” respectively, but “Blackout” also earned a nom for Best Metal Performance.

Speaking with Rolling Stone, drummer Daniel Fang says that being nominated in both the rock and metal categories is more than fitting for Turnstile.

“I personally like that because, for a lot of us, genre feels like an antiquated term and perspective,” Fang shares. “Generally speaking, trying to fit an artist or a song into a genre feels like you’re playing by arbitrary rules. I think it’s kind of refreshing to be placed in two different genres because that just highlights that you shouldn’t be restricted.”

Vocalist Brendan Yates adds, “Growing up, where we came from and what we’re inspired by, it’s a very wide spectrum of music — including punk and metal and rock and all kinds of things.”

“The fact that it somehow could fit into both feels pretty accurate to us,” he says.

The 2023 Grammys will take place February 5 in Los Angeles.
