Twenty One Pilots bring their past eras together in the video for “The Outside.”
The nearly seven-minute clip, streaming now on YouTube, finds frontman Tyler Joseph washing up on a cold beach, where he’s found by drummer Josh Dun. The two then go on a journey through a mysterious island as they encounter images from past Twenty One Pilots videos while nodding to the red and yellow color palettes of their past albums, Blurryface and Trench, respectively.
At one point, Joseph and Dun find themselves in a cave filled with Neds, the adorable alien creature first seen in the “Chlorine” video.
“This is a story about cycles, and trying to break them,” Twenty One Pilots say of “The Outside” video. “About discerning between external and internal attacks. And about balance. A balance between being saved by a friend, and saving yourself.”
“The Outside” appears on Twenty One Pilots’ newest album, Scaled and Icy, which dropped last May. It’s the fourth Scaled and Icy track to get a video, following lead single “Shy Away,” “Choker” and “Saturday.”
