U2, Metallica, DMB among top touring artists of the last 40 years

U2, Metallica and Dave Matthews Band are among the top-touring artists of the last 40 years.

That’s according to concert industry publication Pollstar, which tallied the best-selling and highest-grossing artists in its 40-year history, specifically between July 7, 1980, and July 1, 2022.

U2 is #1 on the list for most tickets sold, with a total of 26,178,043. DMB follows at #2 with 23,279,056, while Metallica takes #6 with 19,468,173.

As for top gross ranking, U2 took in $2,127,771,684, second only to The Rolling Stones, who lead all artists with a total gross of $2,165,280,638. Metallica earned $1,219,599,179, which was good enough for ninth place, while DMB sits at #13 with a gross of $1,085,558,730.

The highest-grossing top 10 also includes Elton John, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Madonna, Celine Dion, Bon Jovi, Eagles and Paul McCartney. The Stones, John, Springsteen and Bon Jovi also make the top 10 for most tickets sold, along with Billy Joel, Kenny Chesney and The Grateful Dead.
