Glass Animals‘ new video for “Tangerine” stars band frontman Dave Bayley in a quadruple role: He plays a man, the man’s wife, and their kid, both as a baby and as a teenager.
“I have to thank director David Wilson hugely for this one — we talked about that theme, and he came up with the beautiful, cyclical narrative for this video,” Bayley says in a statement.
“I fell in love with it when he told me the idea, but I was petrified of having to act,” he reveals. “I have always hated the idea of doing any sort of ‘acting’…however small or subtle the role. But he was so sure I could do it. and I have to say I had a lot of fun trying.”
The entire clip takes place in a car, where Bayley is seen driving with his pregnant wife, which is just him with a blonde wig and some padding. Then, they’re driving in the car with a baby in the backseat, and the baby has Bayley’s face.
Next, the “wife” drops “her” wedding ring out of the window and leaves the family, and Bayley is left driving the car with his surly, now-teenage son in the back seat. Finally, the wife returns — and is soon pregnant again.
“The song is about seeing someone get lost in the unimportant things in the world…to the point where they lose what made them unique and incredible,” Bayley says in a statement.
“Tangerine” is from Glass Animals’ latest album Dreamland. Meanwhile, the band’s latest single, “Heat Waves,” continues to climb the charts. It’s also featured in FIFA 21 video game.
