Back in 2015, Kaleo performed their hit song “Way Down We Go” inside a dormant volcano in their native Iceland. Apparently, that experience wasn’t extreme enough for frontman JJ Julius Son.
In Kaleo’s newly released video for their song “Skinny,” Julius Son performs an acoustic version of the song in front of Iceland’s Fagradalsfjall, a very active volcano that erupted in March after 800 years of dormancy.
The clip finds Julius Son strumming his guitar and singing into a single microphone while impressively not freaking out while endless lava flows behind him.
“It was an amazing and surreal experience to film and record this video in front of the live eruption,” Julius Son says. “It was very challenging and required a difficult hike, carrying the equipment with our bare hands. We filmed it during the night, so fortunately there weren’t many people there.”
You can watch the video streaming now on YouTube.
“Skinny” appears on Kaleo’s upcoming album, Surface Sounds, the follow-up to 2016’s A/B. It will arrive April 23 after being postponed from its original 2020 release date due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
